ArchitectureWeek Notes No. 424

Dear ArchitectureWeek Readers,

ArchitectureWeek No. 424 is now available on the Web, with these
new design and building features, and more. This edition of ArchWeek
Notes is sponsored by 3D Models from RedEye ARC:

RedEye ARC produces 3D scaled replica models of residential and
commercial buildings. Fused deposition modeling(R) technology
offers time and cost savings over traditional modeling methods.
The plastic models are accurate, durable, and interactive,
allowing clients to remove floors to view each interior floor
plan and its features. Because the models are built from the
bottom up, details such as stone, tile, appliances, and fixtures
are possible, helping architects to easily communicate designs
 to their clients.

ASU POLYTECHNIC GREEN
    by Susan Smith
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/today.html
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0422/building_1-1.html

The new academic complex on the Polytechnic campus of
Arizona State University (ASU) was built to withstand
the insistent, erosive forces of the desert around Mesa,
	Arizona.

"Being out on the eastern part of the valley, the site
is very exposed and gets hit very hard with wind and
rain," says Beau Dromiack, design leader for RSP
Architects, the architect of record for the project. "It
requires a durable architecture which we call 'desert
	tough.'"

The design team, including RSP, design architect
Lake/Flato Architects, and Ten Eyck Landscape
Architects, was also charged with forging an identity
that would unify the structures within the campus
context. The team had a 22-month design and construction
schedule and a budget of $104 million to work with.

And they had to do it sustainably. The ASU goal for the
project was a LEED Silver certification, but "our actual
LEED points are at Gold level," Dromiack reports.
	Certification is currently pending.

	Screening the Desert Sun
Located in the core of ASU's Polytechnic campus, the new
academic complex provides 245,000 square feet (22,800
square meters) of space for science, agribusiness,
education, and humanities programs, with functions
ranging from a black box theater to a hazmat facility.
The classrooms, labs, studios, offices, and gathering
spaces are arranged around three courtyards, in a dense,
	pedestrian-oriented configuration.

Green or Greenwashed?
    by Christine MacDonald
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0422/environment_1-1.html

What would you call a green building standard that, on
balance, tends to interfere with environmental reform
	more than help?

In March 2009, ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
television show featured the first house in the country
to win certification under the new green building
standard from the National Association of Home Builders.

	** ArchitectureWeek is a green and low-carbon-footprint
publication. By publishing this professional design and building
magazine online-only, we save about 48 tons of paper monthly,
50 large trees every week, or 2500 trees (a dozen or more acres
of mature conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a
similar readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
	through our local electric utilities.
