OLSON SUNDBERG KUNDIG ALLEN AIA FIRM AWARD
by Brian Libby
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/today.html
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0225/design_1-1.html
Since Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects was
founded, the Seattle firm has sought to integrate
contemporary architectural forms into the natural
settings of the Pacific Northwest, employing a
combination of sensitivity and efficiency that can be
recognized as sustainable design.
Jim Olson established the firm in 1971 on two principles
that continue to inform its work today: that buildings
can serve as a bridge between nature and culture, and
that inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on
people's lives.
Olson's success in growing a firm that creates works of
exceptional form and texture has been recognized by the
American Institute of Architects with its 2009 AIA
Architecture Firm Award.
The AIA's highest honor for a firm recognizes a practice
that has consistently produced distinguished
architecture for at least ten years. Olson Sundberg
Kundig Allen joins such other recipients as
KieranTimberlake, Miller Hull, Gensler, Gwathmey Siegel,
and Roche-Dinkeloo.
Craft at Any Scale
With just under 90 people on staff, Olson Sundberg
Kundig Allen is big enough to compete for large-scale
commissions and small enough to continue designing
outstanding single-family homes.

Analyzing SMI Concrete for Adaptive Reuse
by D. Matthew Stuart
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0225/building_1-1.html
Owners and developers are increasingly opting, for many
reasons, to convert existing buildings for new uses.
If no drawings are available for an older building, a
structural engineer will often turn to industry
resources to try and determine the nature and capacity
of the existing structural system. Available information
is then used to confirm that the facility meets the
current building code requirements or to determine what
strengthening or remediation must occur to accommodate
the new use intended by the architect or owner.

"I love your articles! Out of all the design magazines and emails
I receive every week, yours is the one I always read. I feel
like I have traveled somewhere and have really seen something.
It is so nice to have a resource that discusses a whole
building - not just the inside, or outside, but how one actually
experiences it." - MLM, Louisville, Kentucky

** ArchitectureWeek is a green and low-carbon-footprint
publication. By publishing this professional design and building
magazine online-only, we save about 48 tons of paper monthly,
50 large trees every week, or 2500 trees (a dozen or more acres
of mature conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a
similar readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
through our local electric utilities.
