Durability through transformation. That was the
architects' vision for the DOK Library Concept Center in
Delft, the Netherlands.
The multimedia library occupies part of the overhauled
Hoogovenpand, a 1970s mixed-use building facing a public
square. Architects Liesbeth van der Pol of Dok
architects (no relation) and Aat Vos of Aequo BV
revitalized the gloomy building, creating the library
space among existing commercial and residential
functions.
Today the complex provides a bright, open setting to
explore the library's diverse offerings alongside
offices, apartments, restaurants, shops, and a bicycle
garage. Far from the stereotype of a library as a
sterile, quiet learning environment, DOK offers books,
magazines, computers, music, movies, and art in a
colorful urban context.
In with the Old
Dok architects was commissioned by the City of Delft to
work out the renovation and expansion of the
Hoogovenpand, including the library space, located in
the central Zuidpoort development. Aequo came on as
interior designer, but the two firms opted to approach
the project as an integrated collaboration.

Build Boston 2008
by Evan H. Shu, FAIA
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2009/0128/news_1-1.html

on the surface, to be its usual hustling, bustling,
active marketplace of hundreds of educational workshops,
dozens of receptions and affiliated conferences, and a
convention floor full of product booths centered around
the design and construction industry.

** ArchitectureWeek is a green and low-carbon-footprint
publication. By publishing this professional design and building
magazine online-only, we save about 48 tons of paper monthly,
50 large trees every week, or 2500 trees (a dozen or more acres
of mature conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a
similar readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
through our local electric utilities.
Reduce your carbon footprint... Switch those old paper-based
monthly subscriptions - and read ArchitectureWeek online!
