HOUSE FOR SWEDEN
by Christine Killory and Rene Davids

http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2008/0910/building_1-1.html
The 70,000-square-foot (6,500-square-meter) building for
the Swedish Embassy in Washington, D.C., is set on a
narrow peninsula at the confluence of Rock Creek and the
Potomac River. Surrounded by water on three sides, the
peninsula faces south and commands spectacular views up
and down the Potomac.
The prominent site called for an emblematic building
through which the essence of Swedish culture,
technology, design sensibility, and governance would be
expressed.
The House of Sweden, designed by Wingardh Arkitektkontor
AB, redefines the contemporary typology of the embassy as
fortified bunker by combining spaces for public and
commercial activities with official functions behind
broad glass facades.
The building consists of five floors and a rooftop
terrace overlooking the river. The public areas on the
first two floors include a lobby, exhibit hall, and a
fully equipped event center with conference and meeting
rooms. The Swedish Embassy is housed on levels two and
three, and there are apartments on levels four and five.

Houses for Victorians
by Robin Guild

Underlying the almost infinite variety of Victorian
houses were a few basic structural forms, repeated
millions of times over by builders following well
established principles.

This Week's Quiz -
What is the average age of a first-time home buyer in
the United States - 28, 32, or 36 years old? What
is the average number of years U.S. home buyers stay in
their first home - four, six, or eight years?
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2008/0910/quiz.html
Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
In 1830 the initial grid was laid out for the town of
Chicago, Illinois, and by 1833 there were 200 houses.
The population continued to expand and the city was
mostly built of wood-framed buildings until the Great
Fire of 1871 gutted Chicago's core. There were 300,000
people living in Chicago at the time of the fire.
The rebuilding of Chicago drove a boom and the
population exploded to two million by 1900. This growth
created pressure for a taller, denser city. What two
inventions in 1850 and 1867 allowed for this upward
growth?

publication. By publishing this professional design and building
magazine online-only, we save about 48 tons of paper monthly,
50 large trees every week, or 2500 trees (a dozen or more acres
of mature conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a
similar readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
through our local electric utilities.
