NEWSEUM BY POLSHEK
by William Lebovich

http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2008/0903/design_1-1.html
The Newseum building by Polshek Partnership Architects adds
vitality and a sense of time and place to Pennsylvania Avenue,
a street that, like so many important streets in Washington,
D.C., had been devoid of movement and three-dimensionality.
A museum about news, the aptly named Newseum moved from
across the Potomac River, in Arlington, Virginia, where
it had outgrown its space. Its parent organization, the
Freedom Forum, sought a location more heavily frequented
by tourists.
With its own deep pockets, plus generous support from
news media companies and others, the Freedom Forum spent
more than $450 million to acquire one of the most
prominent sites in the capital and have a signature
building designed by Polshek Partnership, with James
Polshek and Robert Young as the lead designers.
Observing the Newseum from the other side of
Pennsylvania Avenue, one can appreciate how Polshek and
Young have the building climb as it moves back from the
Avenue, and how on the side street, the building widens
as it moves from museum display space to Freedom Forum
offices to condominiums. The condominium portion, with
its airy sunscreens, appears to reach out to the
apartments across the street...

This Week's Quiz -
In 1830 the initial grid was laid out for the town of
Chicago, Illinois, and by 1833 there were 200 houses.
The population continued to expand and the city was
mostly built of wood-framed buildings until the Great
Fire of 1871 gutted Chicago's core. There were 300,000
people living in Chicago at the time of the fire.
The rebuilding of Chicago drove a boom and the
population exploded to two million by 1900. This growth
created pressure for a taller, denser city. What two
inventions in 1850 and 1867 allowed for this upward growth?
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2008/0903/quiz.html
Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
Match each energy type with its geologic origins:
1. Natural Gas
2. Oil
3. Coal
A. Formed from organic remains of algae that thrived in
the oceans during two warm periods 90 million and 150
million years ago.
B. Also from buried remains of ancient organisms, but
unlike "A" above, comes from plants and animals that
decomposed at higher temperatures deeper
underground.
C. Warm, wet climates 360 million to 300 million years
ago gave rise to an explosive growth of swamp plants
that were eventually buried, subjected to high
temperatures and transformed into this energy source.

** ArchitectureWeek is a green and low-carbon-footprint
publication. By publishing this professional design and building
magazine online-only, we save about 48 tons of paper monthly,
50 large trees every week, or 2500 trees (a dozen or more acres
of mature conifer forest) each year, compared to reaching a
similar readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by a green mix of 98% wind energy and 2% solar power
through our local electric utilities.
