BOWDOIN COLLEGE MUSEUM OF ART
    by James McCown
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/today.html
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2008/0618/culture_1-1.html

Museums today aspire to be open, transparent, and
welcoming. However admirable these qualities appear from
our 21st-century viewpoint, it is instructive to
remember that at the height of the Gilded Age, when the
American museum was ascendant, the opposite was true.

The lavish Beaux-Arts buildings of that era were
unapologetically aristocratic and aloof. Art buildings -
both public and private - were funded, designed, and run
by bluebloods. The middle-class visitors allowed into
their walls were presumed to be elevated, spiritually if
not socially, by the museum-visiting experience itself.

No small building in New England so exquisitely
epitomizes the Beaux-Arts style as Charles Follen
McKim's Walker Art Building at Bowdoin College, whose
exterior has remained unchanged since its opening in
	1894.

Several prominent architects have attempted over the
past decade to enlarge the Walker for the college's
Museum of Art and were met with multiple contradictions.

Everyone agrees that the building's haughty elegance
should be maintained, but the rigid symmetry and grand
entrance stairway so essential to the Beaux-Arts style
were problematic for handicapped access, and lent a
sense that the elite college was turning its back on
	Brunswick, Maine, its host community.

Getting Green Products Right
    by Thomas E. Glavinich
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2008/0618/environment_1-1.html

Green project requirements can be found just about
anywhere in the contract documents. This is also true
for green building product requirements that are an
important part of any green building project.
Just like green project requirements, green building
product requirements can be included in the contract
	documents either explicitly or implicitly.

This Week's Quiz -
The three main fibers used in carpets are wool, olefin,
and nylon. Nylon is probably the most commonly used
fiber. Why would you consider or not consider wool or
	olefin in its place?
     http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2008/0618/quiz.html

Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
True or false (for lumber in the United States):
	A. Joists are customarily specified in terms of nominal
sizes, but calculations to determine the allowable span
and required modulus of elasticity are based on actual size.
	B. A "two-by-four" is typically half an inch less deep
and a "two-by-eight" is typically three-quarters of an
inch less deep than the nominal size (actual depths are
3.5 inches and 7.25 inches, respectively).
