SPECIAL ISSUE ON BRIDGES
    by ArchitectureWeek
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/today.html
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2008/0213/design_1-1.html

Whether crossing an atrium, street, canal, canyon, or
sound, whether ancient, historic, modern, or high-tech,
made of stone, concrete, steel, or glass, the bridge is
a special kind of connecting structure.

Topologically, where most buildings exist largely to
enclose space in varying degrees, bridges tend to
	puncture it.

While buildings, especially the buildings of our current
age, may hide their structure behind a complex skin,
most bridges are expressively frank in their structural
gymnastics, sometimes to the point of exhibitionism.

Gateshead Millennium Bridge
    by Don Barker
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2008/0213/building_1-1.html

Since the ancient Romans built the first span across the
River Tyne between the towns of Gateshead and Newcastle
in northeastern England, bridges have loomed large in
	the local landscape.

Newcastle's river skyline has become a veritable
cacophony of bridges, forming vital transportation links
supporting the local heavy industries of shipbuilding,
coal mining, and iron and steel works. Now the newest
piece in the illustrious collection, the Gateshead
Millennium Bridge, is once again making history.

This Week's Quiz -
The permeability of materials to water vapor is measured
in perms. Materials with higher perm ratings are more
breathable than those with lower perm ratings. These
ratings vary by material and density. Materials used as
vapor barriers have low perm ratings. True or false: a
material with a perm rating greater than 1 is considered
	a "breathable" material?
