A BLOCK IN TEMPLE BAR
by Sheila O'Donnell & John Tuomey
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/today.html
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2008/0130/design_1-1.html
O'Donnell + Tuomey Architects spent ten years working on
one block in Temple Bar, the cultural quarter of Dublin,
Ireland.
We started on conversion of the former Quaker Meeting
House into the Irish Film Centre in 1986. Meeting House
Square, with the National Photographic Archive and the
Gallery of Photography, was opened to the public in
1996.
The Quakers had accumulated a cluster of overlapping
properties, which they built up around the 17th-century
foundations of their mid-block meeting house. Our
site-specific strategy for the new film center o
comprising new interventions, surgical demolitions,
simple conversion, and invisible mending o was intended
to continue the process of gradual change and
incremental adaptation that had characterized the
historical development of this complex site.
The opportunity for new building was limited to the
edges, with an opened-up courtyard forming the heart of
the project. Four pedestrian routes from surrounding
streets connect to the glass-roofed foyer, which, by its
stone and steel floor, pigmented rendered surfaces, and
lines of neon lighting, integrates the new cinema uses
with the old urban fabric. The building cluster
accommodates various aspects of film culture, including
two movie theaters, a film archive, bookshop,
restaurant, bar, education rooms, and film production
offices.

Autodesk University Number 15
by Susan Smith
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2008/0130/tools_1-1.html
In his main-stage presentation at Autodesk University
2007, Autodesk CEO Carl Bass cited several key trends in
the world of architecture, engineering, and construction
(AEC): increased digitization, increased globalization,
a boom in global building and infrastructure, the rising
cost of energy, and climate change. He made the case
that technology is required for more efficient and more
sustainable design, building, and maintenance of that
new infrastructure worldwide.

Product News - AlumaFloor Aluminum Floor Tile
AlumaFloor tiles are precision-machined from aircraft
aluminum. They require no grouting or fasteners, resulting in
a smooth, high-tech appearance. With a durable, slip-resistant
surface, the flooring is well suited to high-impact,
high-traffic areas. The flooring includes recycled content and
can be recycled at the end of its useful life, estimated by
the Professional Flooring Installers Association to be over
100 years. The cost of the tiles is competitive with other
metals and lower than marble or granite.
