Dear ArchitectureWeek Readers,
ArchitectureWeek No. 360 is now available on the Web, with these
new design and building features, and more. This Notes issue is
sponsored by Bentley:
Bentley's BIM solutions allow architects, engineers,
contractors, owners, and operators who design, analyze, build,
and operate buildings and facilities to be in sync with each
other throughout the entire building lifecycle. Save time,
improve quality, and create better buildings because of the
informed decisions made along the way. Try it yourself...

ADDITIONAL PHILOSOPHY
by Leigh Christy

Nestled on the edge of a dike in the southwestern
Netherlands, the compact Punt House addition completed
by Geen Punt Architecten (GPA) in summer 2007 carefully
reconciles no fewer than three disparate architectural
philosophies within its slender wood frame.
The original house of the Punt family (no relation to
the architecture firm) is of traditionally massed brick
construction, the last in a short row of a 1930s housing
block just outside Rotterdam. It was designed in a
subdued Amsterdam School expressionist style, with all
of its socialist leanings and articulated detailing, but
was spatially no match for the Punts' two large St.
Bernard dogs and the desire for an improved garden view.
While traveling in Asia for business, the Punts had
become fascinated by small Japanese temples and garden
houses. Architect Joost van Veen understood his client's
wishes, but quickly realized that "these buildings were
mostly exterior structures and the challenge was to turn
them into interior spaces without losing their
character."
In attempts to settle this quandary while merging
Amsterdam School brick with Japanese wood, GPA sought a
middle way by looking to the past: Dutch minimalist
modernism, one of the precursors to the International
Style and a philosophical competitor of the Amsterdam
School.

Wiki Case Study - Part Two
by ArchitectureWeek
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2007/1205/tools_1-1.html
In Part One of this architectural wiki tutorial, we
created the core of a building case study in the
Archiplanet wiki, with summary building information and
uploaded photos we took ourselves.
Here in Part Two, we will enhance that study with an
external link, add a live building location map, and
select and collect appropriate images from a
photo-sharing site, and see how to add those to the
building case study, too.

This Week's Quiz -
Rammed-earth and adobe walls are sometimes used in the
southwestern and south-central United States, among other
places worldwide. The selection of one system over the
other might be made based on the character of the native
soil. What is the fundamental difference between the
soils used in rammed earth and in adobe walls?

Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
What is a "jack" rafter, what is a "roof tree," and what
