MARKET v. MEANING
    by Giancarlo La Giorgia
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/today.html
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2007/0801/design_1-1.html

On June 10, internationally renowned architects Rem
Koolhaas and Peter Eisenman shared their
often-conflicting opinions on what they consider to be
the most pressing issue in architecture today, during a
discussion entitled "Urgency" at the Canadian Centre for
	Architecture (CCA) in Montreal.

The event was attended by dozens of local architects,
students, and admirers, and concluded with a panel
discussion, where they were joined by architect and CCA
Founding Director Phyllis Lambert, a well-known
philanthropist and member of the influential Bronfman
	family.

Koolhaas presented his views first, discussing the death
of the icon - "partly due to ridicule, partly to overdose
and certainly [connected to] money" - and the dilemma
	this represents for architects.

"If you look back over the past 2,000 years, architecture
dignified civic and public life. Then the market economy
happened, replacing all former values and erasing almost
all ideology over the entire world. What it represents
for all of us today is an invitation to simply be
extravagant and spectacular. It will not be subtle," he
	said.

Record Floods Sweep UK
    by ArchitectureWeek
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2007/0801/news_1-1.html

Record-breaking floods washed over substantial areas of
the United Kingdom in June and July, from South London to
Northern Ireland. Likely influenced by a La Nina cycle in
the Pacific Ocean, the U.K. experienced a warm, dry
April, followed by a series of unseasonably heavy rain
storms. Repeated flooding has left several people dead,
damaged tens of thousands of homes, caused £2 billion
(US$4.1 billion) or more in property damage, killed
	livestock, and ruined crops.

This Week's Quiz -
While "broach" can mean a piece of jewelry, it is also
used as a verb and a noun in stone masonry. What is a
	broach in masonry terms?

Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
In response to concerns about climate changes, there has
been a movement in several areas of the country to
require higher levels of environmental responsibility in
the design and construction of buildings. In some cases
this effort is led by architects, such as in Oregon,
where architects have helped initiate legislation (not
yet adopted) requiring state-funded buildings over a
certain size and cost to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design) Gold standards. Many of us
think of "green" architecture as being mostly concerned
with energy conservation. LEED addresses energy and four
other major areas of concern. What are the four other
	areas that LEED addresses?
