ALBERTA CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL
    by Katharine Logan
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/today.html
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2007/0725/building_1-1.html

The Alberta Children's Hospital (ACH), designed by Kasian
Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd., sets a
new standard for family-centered care in a
	state-of-the-art pediatric care and infection-control
	facility. The 70,000-square-meter (750,000-square-foot)
facility serves as the hub of the Alberta Children's
	Healthcare Network.

Delivered ahead of schedule and under budget, the success
of the ACH project derives from a collaborative approach
that involved health care providers, hospital user
	groups, construction management representatives and
contractors, patients' families, and children themselves.

Kasian's healthcare designers have found from previous
projects that the sheer complexity of the medical
environment - with its advanced technology, wide range of
medical procedures, and constant change o means extra
benefits from an integrated design approach.

Rather than encumbering the design process, the
integration of stakeholders' perspectives builds a level
of trust and shared commitment. This often translates
into an accelerated schedule or increased public and user
	satisfaction with a project.

Seeking Green Normal with the CEC
    by Brian Libby
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2007/0725/environment_1-1.html

With a total population of over 400 million, North
America is the largest free-trade zone in the world,
thanks to the North American Free Trade Agreement
approved by the United States, Canada, and Mexico in
1994. When NAFTA was finalized, the three governments
also agreed on a side accord, the North American
Agreement on Environmental Cooperation, in order to
address concerns about unequal environmental regulations
	in the three countries.

This Week's Quiz -
In response to concerns about climate changes, there has
been a movement in several areas of the country to
require higher levels of environmental responsibility in
the design and construction of buildings. In some cases
this effort is led by architects, such as in Oregon,
where architects have helped initiate legislation (not
yet adopted) requiring state-funded buildings over a
certain size and cost to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design) Gold standards. Many of us
think of "green" architecture as being mostly concerned
with energy conservation. LEED addresses energy and four
other major areas of concern. What are the four other
	areas that LEED addresses?

Architecture Answer - for last issue's quiz...
Stainless steel should probably be considered stain-less
rather than stain-proof since it is not unusual to see
some rusting on stainless steel. How could some of this
	rusting be prevented during fabrication?
