Dear ArchitectureWeek Readers,

ArchitectureWeek No. 323 is now available on the Web, with these
new design and building features, and more:

ESSEX STREET HOUSE
    by Leigh Christy
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2007/0221/design_1-1.html

Australian architect Andrew Maynard is bursting with
theories. He develops concepts such as "malleable space"
into architectural "products" such as a mobile bedroom
unit, with the ultimate goal being to transform it into
architecture. The process sounds simple enough, but
Maynard is the first to acknowledge that such conversions
are rarely smooth. "Reality is always getting our floaty
idealized concepts dirty, and that is half of the fun."

The dirt seems to brush off easily, however, and the
young firm Andrew Maynard Architects is garnering
worldwide attention for both floaty concepts and dirty
	reality.

The Essex Street House is the firm's latest built
experiment. Here, Maynard investigates malleable space at
a larger scale, seamlessly integrating qualities of both
industrial and domestic worlds to create an alternate
universe in a backyard on the edge of Melbourne.

AIA Honor Awards 2007
    by ArchitectureWeek
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2007/0221/news_1-1.html

The AIA announced 29 recipients of the organization's
annual honor awards for architecture, interior, and urban
design in January 2007. Richard A. Logan, AIA, chair of
the jury for the architecture awards, cited "the exterior
aspects, the quality of the interior spaces, site
	considerations, environmental issues, and social
relevance" as factors in making the final selections.

Continuing Education Online
    by Evan H. Shu, FAIA
    http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2007/0221/tools_1-1.html

We live in a wonderful age in which architects can be
educated in almost any subject you can imagine, via the
Internet. Over the course of this last year, I have gone
"back to school" online for lessons in such diverse
subjects as book publishing, SketchUp photo modeling,
calibrating bitmaps in DataCAD, doing ZiPCAD punch lists,
	and solving a Rubik's Cube.

This Week's Quiz -
The new pedestrian bridge "Passerelle Simone de Beauvoir"
crosses the Seine in Paris. It has a length of 885 feet
(270 meters) and a main span of 620 feet (190 meters),
yet its main structure, a "pectinate lenticular" truss,

this professional design and building magazine online only,

50 large trees every week - some 2500 trees saved per year,
compared to reaching a similar readership on paper - not
counting these newsletters! Our offices are powered by 100%
