CANADIAN CONTEMPORARY
by Andrew Gruft
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/today.html
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2007/0131/design_1-1.html
Canadian architecture has always eschewed the dominance
of formalism for more complex and integrated solutions
reflecting its humanist concerns. The strong
social-democratic trend of governmental supervision and
community control in Canada influences architecture
through a complex framework of programming, design
guidelines, zoning by-laws, and building codes, within
which designers must operate. Such a system is unlikely
to allow stylistic concerns to override programmatic
ones.
But this seems to have challenged rather than inhibited
the imagination of architects and enriched their work
with a multivalent layering of response to a broad range
of demands. Such values form the underlying basis of a
Canadian architecture that favors substance over
spectacle, distinguishing itself from the work of many
other nations now garnering attention in the
architectural press.
The Bahen Centre for Information Technology at the
University of Toronto by Diamond + Schmitt Architects is
about the size of a city block and involves dealing with
equivalent complexity. It demonstrates clarity of
organization and circulation critical for projects of
this size, and a strong architectural expression that is
varied but coherent within the overall unity of the
project.

Sealing Out Water
by William L. Walker, AIA
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2007/0131/building_1-1.html
Sealants are an important part of the building envelope
system. I think of them as the third line of defense
against water and vapor intrusion. The first line of
defense is made up of the building skin, with its
coatings, veneers, and sheathings. Membranes and
flashings are secondary.

Building Potential
by Michael Cockram
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2007/0131/environment_1-1.html
In the rolling hills just east of Austin, Texas, a small
compound of experimental buildings makes up the Center
for Maximum Potential Building Systems (CMPBS). Here,
Pliny Fisk III, his partner Gail Vittori, and a cadre of
researchers and interns explore the depths of sustainable
building.

Product News - AdvaTech's Selective Laser Sintering system
provides architectural firms with durable models built
to spec. A one-piece thermoplastic model can be created
in the fraction of the time and cost it would take to build
the same model by hand. This service enables architects to
offer clients a scale model that can be handled without
concern.

Classic Home 20 - Classic Colonial by Frederick L. Ackerman
http://www.ArchitectureWeek.com/2007/0131/classic_home.html
This Week's Quiz -
The following projects were completed two years apart
during the same decade; Vietnam Veterans Memorial,
Washington DC; AT&T Building, New York; Thorncrown
Chapel; and the Los Angles Museum of Contemporary Art.
Who is the designer of each, and which in decade were
they built? If determining the decade is too easy, try
ordering them from oldest to newest.
