AIA HOUSING AWARDS: SINGLE FAMILY
In the Towerview neighborhood of Racine, Wisconsin, a strikingly modern two-story home stands apart on a lakefront site. Though its architects credit nearby Victorians as inspiration for the vivid colors highlighting its facade, the playful tone, rectilinear massing, and structurally expressive detailing seem to make more recent references - as well they might.
The OS House is one of eight single-family residential projects honored by the American Institute of Architects in its 2011 AIA Housing Awards. The winning projects range from a renovated historic guest house in Rhode Island to a line of modular, affordable, energy-efficient townhouses in Philadelphia. Like the LEED Platinum-certified OS House, many of the award winners boast considerable sustainable design features.
ArchitectureWeek published the ten multifamily and special housing projects that received 2011 AIA Housing Awards in March. In addition, one of the premiated single-family homes - the Hodus-Brogan House in Blair, Wisconsin, designed by Alchemy - was covered in ArchitectureWeek No. 506 as the recipient of a design award from AIA Minnesota.
Green in Racine
The OS House is located on a sloping infill lot along Lake Michigan's western shore, about a mile south of downtown Racine. With energy efficiency and a modest budget in mind, Johnsen Schmaling Architects designed the home as a two-story rectangular box with a relatively traditional configuration: ground-floor living spaces, an integral one-car garage, and bedrooms on the second floor.
Developing the box concept using plenty of glass and steel, the main living spaces are light and open, with extensive views of the lake and neighborhood. >>>
Maki's Hillside Terrace
by Fumihiko Maki
The Hillside Terrace project, a medium-density mixed-use development of apartments, shops, restaurants, and cultural facilities, took exactly 25 years from the first plans I drew in 1967 to the completion of its sixth phase in 1992. Although I have designed buildings and complexes far greater in physical scale over the past several decades, no other project has occupied my thoughts so continuously over time as Hillside Terrace has. >>>
It's fast, easy, private, and secure.
