Raymond Erith, Architect (1904-1973): Progressive Classicist

Raymond Erith stands out as one England's most intriguing 20th-century architects. Erith's work went against the prevailing modernist currents of post-war architecture. His meticulous and sensitive designs earned him the respect of the establishment and led to prestigious commissions. As architect for the remodelling of 10 and 11 Downing Street in the 1960s Erith followed in the footsteps of one of his heroes, John Soane. This exhibition, curated by Erith's daughter and biographer Lucy Archer, will look at the life and work of this exceptionally gifted and stubbornly independent architect. As well as original sketches and drawings the exhibition will feature a stunning series of newly commissioned photographs of Erith's work by Mark Fiennes, one of England's most respected architectural photographers.
