	AIA NATIONAL DESIGN AWARDS Viewed at a distance from the southwest, 8 House looks almost like a strange landform: two vegetated roofs form a massive green "V" reaching from the ground-floor roof all the way to the top of the building, nine stories above. The logic of this mixed-use building is better understood from a bird's-eye view. In concept, the plan is a 230-meter- (750-foot-) long loop that has been twisted to form a giant, angular figure eight. — Published 2012.0215
	SHUBIN + DONALDSON - FROM FUEL TO BISCUIT The apparent placelessness of Los Angeles, where one community bleeds into another with little visible distinction, can partially be attributed to its major industries — advertising, television, movies, the web — because these businesses live placelessly, mostly in periodicals, or on screens in the theater, in the family room, and at the desk. — Published 2011.1130
	HS#9 BY COOP HIMMELB(L)AU "Revolution 9" is a song recorded by the Beatles and released on The White Album in 1968, that heady year when students were demonstrating across Europe, the Vietnam War was at a fever pitch, and Coop Himmelb(l)au was founded in Vienna. 	NEW YORK AIA AWARDS 2010 Thirty feet above street level, a narrow new park winds through a former industrial area on the West Side of Manhattan, near the Hudson River. 	LOS ANGELES AIA AWARDS 2008 Three projects received top honors for built architecture in the annual design awards of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA): the Water + Life Museums and Campus in Hemet, California, by Lehrer + Gangi Design + Build; the Art Center College of Design's South Campus in Pasadena, by Daly Genik; and the NOAA Satellite Operations Facility in Suitland, Maryland, by Morphosis. — Published 2008.1029
	SAN FRANCISCO AIA AWARDS 2008 With 40 different awards given by the San Francisco chapter of the AIA, and only a few repeat winners among them, there were plenty of happy architects by the Bay this year. Pritzker Prize-winner Thom Mayne and his Santa Monica firm, Morphosis, received one of four honor awards for excellence in architecture. 	MAYNE COURTHOUSE The new Federal Courthouse in Eugene, Oregon by Thom Mayne and his Los Angeles firm Morphosis, is in some ways an outstanding building for this small city. Mayne certainly delivers a strong dose of visual excitement. The depth of art in this architecture is more open to question. — Published 2007.0103
	EDGY IN LA In June 2006, downtown Los Angeles was overrun with architects in town for the National AIA Convention. When not exploring the burgeoning city center and notable regional architecture, these visitors were eagerly learning about the "next new thing" for the profession. This year's convention combined big names and varied themes to create a full agenda of educational seminars, architectural tours, trade exposition booths, and business meetings. The event drew a record 25,000 registrants to the Los Angeles Convention Center. — Published 2006.0719
