MAKI'S MIT MEDIA LAB
For an academic unit that produces such forward-thinking projects as electronic ink, humanoid robots, and a digital opera, one might expect an edgy, geometrically wild building by Zaha Hadid or Coop Himmelb(l)au. But for the new building for the MIT Media Lab, Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki designed a serene example of classic modernism — a glass-and-steel form wrapped in an elegant aluminum screen. AIA HONORS LEERS WEINZAPFEL AND VIETNAM MEMORIAL
The American Institute of Architects has announced the recipients of two of its highest honors. The 2007 AIA Architecture Firm Award has gone to the Boston-based Leers Weinzapfel Associates Architects (LWA) in recognition of their history of design excellence. And the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., by designer Maya Lin, was selected to receive the 2007 AIA Twenty-five Year Award. Published 2007.0124

NEW ENGLAND AIA AWARDS
Both rural and urban exemplars were honored recently when the New England chapter of the American Institute of Architecture presented nine awards for "Excellence in Architecture."
Of the four northeastern projects to receive the honor award, one is a writer's studio on Mount Desert Island, Maine by Carol A. Wilson Architect. The client wanted to take advantage of the beauty of the site and views across Somes Sound, while respecting the fragile landscape. Published 2005.0309
