    MULTI-ELEPHANT HOUSING BY FOSTER

The Copenhagen Zoo's new Elephant House by Foster + Partners emerges gently from the surrounding park grounds, its two leaf-patterned glass domes topping walls of pink-hued concrete. At once playful and serious, transparent and solid, this modern menagerie provides both high-quality living conditions for the animals inside and an exciting and interactive visitor experience. — Published 2009.0401

    NEW YORK NEW MUSEUM

As you make your way east on Prince Street from Sixth Avenue in lower Manhattan, a pile of shimmering cubes rises at the end of Prince as it dead-ends at the Bowery. What is it? There are no windows in sight. A puffy white cloud slowly passes behind it and the silvery tower seems to disappear inside the cumulus skycraft. — Published 2008.0820

    BEIJING TERMINAL 3 BY FOSTER

The Chinese have long been good at big gestures, and one of Beijing's latest — courtesy of London's Foster + Partners — is lifting spirits in the capital at a rate of thousands per day. — Published 2008.0723

    HEARST TOWER

Pritzker Prize laureate Norman Foster is a master of levitating buildings of dubious design, treatment, or association to the pantheon of architectural icons. The Hearst Tower in Manhattan, which he designed in collaboration with architects Adamson Associates and Gensler, is the most recent example of this resuscitation.

The 42-story glass- and metal-skinned tower is characterized by a large diagonal grid, emphasized by vertically alternating recessed and projecting multistory corner triangles. — Published 2007.0523

    NEW YORK AIA AWARDS 2007

The New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects announced its 2007 Design Award winners during its annual symposium in February. Recognized by this program are projects of design excellence — architecture and interiors — that were either built in New York City or designed by New York architects but built elsewhere. — Published 2007.0328

    FIVE YEARS LATER

We bear witness this week both to an international tragedy and to the largest architectural disaster in U.S. history. Five years ago, two of our largest buildings were utterly and unexpectedly destroyed, killing thousands of people who were unable to escape them. On this anniversary, as people around the world can still feel the ground reverberating, let us pause in remembrance.

    LONDON BIENNIAL

Though known globally for the breadth of its historic architecture, London is striving for contemporary credentials. In the city's recent architecture biennale, part of the United Kingdom-wide celebration called "Architecture Week," organizers brought the changing city fabric to world attention. New quirky landmarks have been popping up all over London, their design exalted, their creators knighted. — Published 2006.0802

    MODELING THE SWISS RE TOWER

The design for the Swiss Re Tower by Foster and Partners draws on advances in digital technologies to develop ideas that we first explored in the Climatroffice design with Buckminster Fuller in the early 1970s. — Published 2005.0504

    LEARNING FROM PIERRE KOENIG

"It was my notion, when I started, to make anonymous architecture for ordinary people."Pierre Koenig (1925 - 2004)

Ironically, the beautiful steel houses of Pierre Koenig, with their stunning, frank simplicity, graceful proportions, and sunny, contextually attuned openness, could hardly expect anonymity in an American landscape of neocolonial, neoclassical, and neovernacular norms. — Published 2004.0421

This is a continuation of an article begun last week about a competition held in Hong Kong to develop ideas for a master plan for the West Kowloon Reclamation site.
