DESIGN WITH ENTERPRISE
I wasn't always fascinated with architecture and design. I'm not an architect, but I have come to realize how important good design is as an ingredient to better human health and well-being. And how important business skills are to successful practice. Published 2012.0425

BASICS - STAIRS, RAMPS, AND SLOPES
Stairs, ramps, and slopes are specific types of flooring assemblies that join two or more different levels.
Their design is guided, in part, by larger design intentions that involve human movement through space, along with scale, location, orientation, wayfinding strategies, and their contextual fit within the immediate and surrounding environment. Published 2012.0418

AIA HOUSING AWARDS: SINGLE-FAMILY
In the Towerview neighborhood of Racine, Wisconsin, a strikingly modern two-story home stands apart on a lakefront site. Though its architects credit nearby Victorians as inspiration for the vivid colors highlighting its facade, the playful tone, rectilinear massing, and structurally expressive detailing seem to make more recent references as well they might. NEW SAN FRANCISCO ARCHITECTURE
SFMOMA commissioned a new sculpture garden for the top of its parking structure, with provisions to connect to the main San Francisco Museum of Modern Art building — a late-20th-century classic that prefigured the wave of museums constructed following the Guggenheim Bilbao in 1997. Jensen & Macy Architects conceived of the garden, which was completed by successor firm Jensen Architects, as a gallery without a ceiling. Published 2010.0609

PETER BOHLIN - AIA GOLD MEDAL
On New York's Fifth Avenue, people approach the Apple Store's glass cube, often first walk around it, then enter and descend by the glass stairs to the below-ground showroom. This store is not only the icon for Apple Inc., but also an exemplar of the architecture of Peter Bohlin: it is an original statement, powerful yet minimalist, that enhances its surroundings and respects the human scale while creating an invigorating sense of movement, pulling in shoppers and spectators in staggering numbers, 24 hours a day. NORTH AMERICAN WOOD
The Richmond Olympic Oval, the venue for long-track speedskating events in the recent Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, is capped by a massive roof almost 6.5 acres (2.6 hectares) in size. The LEED Silver-certified building, designed by Cannon Design, features prefabricated pine panels spanning between hollow composite wood-steel arches to form a rhythmically pleated timber ceiling over the ice.
