    MAYBECK'S SENGER HOUSE

"Ring in the love of truth and right [...] Ring in the thousand years of peace" —"In Memoriam"

These lines, by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, are inscribed into the Senger House's baronially scaled fireplace and set the mood for this remarkable dwelling. Medieval Teutonic imagery is stenciled throughout the house and carved into overscaled architectural woodwork — a Maybeckian evocation of his client, a professor of German at the nearby University of California. — Published 2013.0327

THE ARCHITECTURAL DETAIL: MAYBECK AND AALTO

The San Francisco-based magazine Architectural News ceased publication in 1891 after only three issues, so there is no way of knowing what the specific contents of a planned future issue, a translation of Gottfried Semper's Der Stil by Bernard Maybeck, might have been. There is no evidence that the translation was ever made, of what sections he would have chosen, or what Semper's influence on Maybeck's work might be. — Published 2012.0404

    LODI BUNKHOUSE

Situated on a vineyard in the flatlands of the Napa Valley, in St. Helena, California, the Lodi Bunkhouse's narrow parcel parallels the Napa River and abandoned Southern Pacific rail line. The bunkhouse's planning, fenestration, and assembly reverberate with the site's inherent orders of directionality and scale. Functioning as an artist's retreat, the program includes open studios, communal domestic zones, and individual bunkrooms. — Published 2010.0811

    JULIA MORGAN IN CHINATOWN

In 1932, architect Julia Morgan saw the opening of her YWCA building in Chinatown, San Francisco. Over 70 years later, actress Jill Jackson portrays the architect in a one-woman show, hosted by the Chinese Historical Society of America Museum and Learning Center, which now occupies the building. An excerpt shows how the play dramatizes Morgan's ideas. Editor — Published 2003.0326

    FROM MAYBECK TO MEGACHURCHES

Now that we have turned the corner into the 21st century, surveying the evolution of religious architecture over the past hundred years seems fair game. Starting from 1900, what were the noticeable changes, and what were the common denominators that survived through the end of the century?

What was the impact of the modern movement in architecture on the designs for religious buildings? Can this evolution provide insight into religious architecture for the new millennium? — Published 2001.0808

    BERNARD MAYBECK: VISIONARY ARCHITECT

The ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement are now so enshrined that their originally avant-garde position in turn-of-the-century culture is easily forgotten. Enclaves of artists and artisans throughout the state of California felt the exhilaration of charting a fresh aesthetic course that touched life as well as art. — Published 2001.0328

    MAYBECK RETURNS TO OREGON

Did you ever fantasize about doing an apprenticeship under one of the great master architects? Working with direct guidance from Frank Lloyd Wright or H. H. Richardson? Now that fantasy has become more realizable: the revered California architect Bernard Maybeck has recently returned to life and, surprisingly, returned to Oregon. — Published 2000.0628
