BNIM - AIA FIRM OF THE YEAR

To become one of the first two buildings to receive full recognition under the Living Building Challenge, the Omega Center for Sustainable Living in Rhinebeck, New York, had to meet a stringent set of criteria, including generating all its energy from renewable resources, and capturing and treating all water used onsite. — Published 2011.0511

    AIA TOP GREEN BUILDINGS 2011

The Kubala Washatko Architects faced a real challenge: create a large yet sympathetic addition to a Frank Lloyd Wright landmark. And the First Unitarian Society of Madison, Wisconsin, wanted this new structure to be very green to boot. — Published 2011.0420

    USING BIM FOR SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

In the process of sustainable design, at one point or another during the design or documentation process, there comes a need to quantify the energy savings, the daylighting, or the recycled content in your building materials. This is done by using other applications to run analysis on the building design and deliver these metrics. — Published 2010.0714

    AIA TOP GREEN BUILDINGS 2010

A boxy new house stands on stilts in the Katrina-ravaged Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans. Its form may be distinctly contemporary, but the home has ties to its place: filigree railings recall the ornamental ironwork of the French Quarter, and a linear plan evokes some sense of the regional shotgun house vernacular. — Published 2010.0428

    GREENBUILD REPORT 2009

"Almost 40 percent of the global warming pollution in our country comes from old, inefficient, leaky buildings that don't have to be that way."

So said former Vice President Al Gore as he opened Greenbuild 2009. — Published 2009.1209

    SOLID GREEN PRACTICE

Given the urgency of our response to climate change and other environmental needs, is it really okay to keep building new non-green buildings?

Here are nine U.S. firms that took sustainability to heart and made green design a centerpiece of their work, and have now taken the next logical step: they have committed to create only green buildings, from here on out. — Published 2009.0506

    AIA GREEN BUILDING AWARDS 2008

Each project in the 2008 "Top Ten Green Projects" awards by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on the Environment (COTE) was evaluated on ten measures, documented extensively on the COTE web site. These include design innovation, community context and land use, longevity, bioclimatic design, water and energy conservation, materials, and indoor environment.

The ten winners — plus one honorable mention — approach sustainable design through an exemplary integration of architecture, technology, and natural systems. — Published 2008.0514

    AUTODESK UNIVERSITY NO. 15

In his main-stage presentation at Autodesk University 2007, Autodesk CEO Carl Bass cited several key trends in the world of architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC): increased digitization, increased globalization, a boom in global building and infrastructure, the rising cost of energy, and climate change. He made the case that technology is required for more efficient and more sustainable design, building, and maintenance of that new infrastructure worldwide. — Published 2008.0130

    NELSON-ATKINS MUSEUM OF ART

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, recently underwent a complete overhaul — and the glowing lenses of the new Bloch Building, designed by Steven Holl Architects, are just the tip of the iceberg. — Published 2007.0905

    SAROFIM RESEARCH BUILDING

The firms of BNIM Architects and Burt Hill have partnered to design a new facility at the Texas Medical Center. The six-story Fayez S. Sarofim Research Building is now home for the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases (IMM). The building's elegant design is, in several ways, a departure from that of conventional research facilities. — Published 2006.0913
