BNIM - AIA FIRM OF THE YEAR

To become one of the first two buildings to receive full recognition under the Living Building Challenge, the Omega Center for Sustainable Living in Rhinebeck, New York, had to meet a stringent set of criteria, including generating all its energy from renewable resources, and capturing and treating all water used onsite. — Published 2011.0511

    EDUCATIONAL BUILDING

At two schools in the Pacific Northwest, daylit classrooms stand in small clusters rather than linear arrays along corridors. Architecture firm Mahlum designed these buildings — Gray Middle School in Tacoma, Washington, and Thurston Elementary School in Springfield, Oregon — to foster small "learning communities" within each school. — Published 2010.0922

    URBANISMS / TURKEY

In Akbuk, Turkey, overlooking the Aegean Sea, a new eco-reserve of small town fragments, like islands in a preserved landscape of cultivated natural vegetation, will be characterized by advanced technologies in sustainability, while also anchored in the poetic reverie of this ancient site. The nearby ancient Greek town of Miletus inspires a compact gridded plan. — Published 2010.0714

    ANIMAL HOSPITAL, UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW

Seen on approach at just the right angle, it might be mistaken for a broad grassy hillside with a glass pavilion.

As one circles around eastward, the "hillside" quickly opens up to reveal the upper green expanse as the roof of a building — the new Small Animal Hospital at the University of Glasgow. — Published 2010.0224

    TWO NEW TENTS

In Frei Otto's landmark examples, the tent fabric was largely glass. Using the term "tent" with admitted looseness, here are two recent examples in the continuing romance of modern expression with tensile engineering. At the Estádio Municipal de Braga, the sheltering tent is made of concrete, while at the Burj Al Arab Hotel, the tent covering is on its side, a great white spinnaker defining a spectacular atrium. — Editor

    NELSON-ATKINS MUSEUM OF ART

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, recently underwent a complete overhaul — and the glowing lenses of the new Bloch Building, designed by Steven Holl Architects, are just the tip of the iceberg. — Published 2007.0905
