A new terminal has opened at Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, based in New Haven, Connecticut, designed the building in collaboration with Stantec. The long, low building features extensive glazing, which transmits daylight and allows passengers to see through the facility, across the prairie, and to downtown Winnipeg. The building also features skylights, an atrium, glass boarding bridges, undulating wood ceilings, and wood-paneled walls.
LEED certification is targeted. Overall, the building is 25 percent more efficient than Canada's Model National Energy Code for Buildings.
In addition to the new terminal, Pelli Clarke Pelli's work included the airport's redevelopment master plan and the design of a parking garage.

At the University of California, Davis, the $300 million first phase of the West Village mixed-use residential community recently opened. Studio E Architects of San Diego designed the seven-building project, which includes 123 units of student and staff housing, 42,500 square feet (3,950 square meters) of ground-level retail space, and a large recreation center for residents, wrapped around a village green.
The net-zero-energy project features an extensive solar panel system strategically placed on oversized, south-facing sawtooth roofs. Other sustainable design features include exceptionally well-insulated building envelopes, extensive sun-shading through fixed and sliding screens, ventilated siding and large roof overhangs, and energy-efficient lighting and appliances in every apartment.
Studio E is now at work designing the next phase of student housing, to the west of the village green.

A new Mennonite church in Elspeet, the Netherlands, recently opened. FARO Architecten of Lisserbroek, the Netherlands, designed the barnlike all-wood building. A narrow entrance opens up into a wide gathering space with a glass facade and whitewood rafters. The interior has been finished with floor boards reclaimed from an old convent. The exterior roof and walls are covered in shingles made of French acacia. The front facade features native oak, and the walls and roof are insulated with flax. The building is heated through thermal storage.

Construction was recently completed on the new South Region High School No. 2 in Los Angeles, California. The Los Angeles office of international multidisciplinary firm Leo A Daly designed the $96.7 million high school for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).
Built to relieve overcrowding at nearby John C. Fremont Senior High School, the new 220,000-square-foot (20,400-square-meter) high school is sectioned into four small learning communities, with a total capacity of 2,000 students. The eight two-level and three-level buildings are all type II steel construction with an exterior skin composed of plaster, CMU veneer, and metal panels. The structures are arranged to form a rectangular perimeter barrier around a central courtyard.
Certified by the Collaborative for High Performing Schools (CHPS), the facility incorporates sustainable features such as automatic lighting controls, low-flow plumbing fixtures, low-VOC paint, energy-efficient air conditioning, operable windows, a white roof, and drought-tolerant landscaping. The Newport Beach office of McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. served as general contractor for the project. The school opened for instruction on September 7.

The Centre for Sustainable Development (Maison du développement durable) has opened in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Designed by Menkès Shooner Dagenais LeTourneux Architectes of Montreal, the demonstration green building is home to eight organizations. It offers a place to meet and share ideas, both for its members and for the public, with meeting rooms and an atrium available for rent.
The five-story, 6,360-square-meter (68,500-square-foot) building is targeting LEED Platinum certification under LEED Canada for New Construction. It is equipped with a ground-source heating and cooling system, a high-performance thermal envelope, triple-pane windows, and a green roof. The atrium features a living wall about 38 square meters (410 square feet) in size. The center also obtained permission from the city not to provide the parking spaces that would otherwise have been required by law. The LEED consultant is Lyse M. Tremblay Éco-Architecture inc.
The building houses the Quebec headquarters of the following organizations: the French section of Amnesty International Canada, Le Petit Réseau daycare, the Conseil régional de l'environnement de Montréal, ENvironnement JEUnesse, Equiterre, Option consommateurs, the Regroupement national des conseils régionaux de l'environnement du Québec, and Vivre en Ville. Tenants include Dunsky Energy Consulting, Le Commensal restaurant, the David Suzuki Foundation, and World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The main donor partner for the CAD$27 million project is Alcoa Canada.

The University of North Texas football stadium has received LEED Platinum certification under LEED-NC v2.2. The 31,000-seat Apogee Stadium is located on UNT's flagship campus, in Denton.
More than half of the stadium site was preserved or restored with landscaping native to the North Texas climate. Paved walkways and bike paths through the parklike environment connect back to the main campus, encouraging fans to walk or bike. The building features energy-efficient HVAC and lighting, water-conserving plumbing fixtures, low-VOC materials, recycled-content materials, and locally manufactured materials. Ninety percent of regularly occupied indoor spaces provide occupants with daylight and views to the outdoors.
In addition, three wind turbines are slated to be installed onsite in December 2011.
The UNT System led the construction of the stadium. International multidisciplinary firm HKS, based in Dallas, served as architect, interior designer, and LEED consultant. The construction manager was Manhattan Construction Company.

The newly completed†Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in†Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom, has opened to students. London-based architecture practice BFLS designed the £22.5 million, 4,400-square-meter (47,000-square-foot) facility, which includes an acoustically excellent 450-seat chamber recital hall, a 180-seat theater, four rehearsal studios, an exhibit gallery, generous foyer areas, a new cafe, and a terrace overlooking Bute Park, the Grade I listed park in which the complex is located.
Although the facility appears to be a single structure, it is actually three separate new buildings combined with a renovated existing structure. The individual components are united under a single floating roof, its height determined by the theater fly tower. The drama building forms a new facade facing the road, while the chamber recital hall, clad in a timber screen of light-colored cedar slats, sits among the park's mature trees. Finishes of stone and wood create visually warm and tactile interiors. The scheme was designed to be BREEM "Excellent."

The Health and Learning Center recently opened at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. Originally conceived as a $34 million expansion project to add health programs to the existing recreation center, the project evolved to include a complete overhaul of Lumberjack Stadium and two floors of classrooms. The architect was the Phoenix office of Cannon Design.
Consolidating the program elements into this $83.2 million, 287,650-square-foot (26,724-square-meter) expansion and renovation project is estimated to have saved the university about $12 million. The "fusion" building houses a 56,600-square-foot (5,260-square-meter) student health clinic, 69,950 square feet (6,500 square meters) of classrooms, 121,600 square feet (11,300 square meters) of student recreation space, 39,500 square feet (3,670 square meters) of athletics space to meet NCAA Title IX requirements, and substantial improvements to Lumberjack Stadium.

In rural Sierra County, New Mexico, the world's first commercial space terminal has been dedicated. Spaceport America was designed by Foster + Partners of London, United Kingdom, working with San Francisco-based engineering firm URS Corporation and SMPC Architects of Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The project design was previously covered in this column ("Sierra County · 2007.0906").
A combined terminal and hangar facility to be operated by Virgin Galactic, the 120,000-square-foot (11,000-square-meter) building will accommodate up to two WhiteKnightTwo carrier crafts and five SpaceShipTwo vehicles. The building will also house all astronaut preparation and celebration facilities and a mission control center.
LEED Gold certification is expected. The low-lying form is dug into the landscape to exploit the thermal mass. The entrance is via a deep channel cut into the landscape. Built using local materials and construction techniques, the building features skylights for daylighting, and takes advantage of westerly winds for ventilation.

The Roca London Gallery has opened in London, England, United Kingdom, providing display space for Roca's bathroom products and ceramic tiles. The 1,100-square-meter (12,000-square-foot) gallery was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, whose 2011 Stirling Prize-winning Evelyn Grace Academy was the firm's first project in its longtime home city of London.
Starting with the gallery's rippled facade, the design takes inspiration from the power of water as a transforming element, with spaces shaped as if eroded and polished by fluids. The flowing white central axis of the gallery leads to a number of smaller, semi-enclosed spaces in concrete. Fissures and slices in the walls create permeability throughout. Designed to be more than just a display space, the gallery will also host exhibits, meetings, presentations, seminars, and debates.
