LEED-EB O&M at the Rose Garden Arena by Tim Shinabarger In the last few years, fans of the Portland Trail Blazers may have noticed some changes to the Rose Garden arena, the basketball team's home court in Portland, Oregon. The white roof may look a bit brighter, after cleaning to improve solar reflectivity. Inside, conventional trash cans have been replaced by 300 receptacles for enhanced recycling and compost disposal. Outside, bicycle racks have proliferated, now accommodating 100 additional bikes. In the event-level concourse, under the new LED lights, a pewter-colored plaque on a gray pillar carries a message that might seem incongruous in a professional sports venue: "U.S. Green Building Council LEED Gold 2010." Indeed, the Rose Garden achieved certification in 2010 under LEED 2009 for Existing Buildings: Operation & Maintenance (LEED-EB: O&M). Like the Empire State Building in New York City, and the Christman Building, a medium-sized office building in Lansing, Michigan, the Rose Garden is one of a growing number of buildings to receive this LEED certification for sustainability of ongoing operations. Here, we focus on the Rose Garden and how the operations of this large event venue were made greener. Rose Garden Arena: Background The Rose Garden is an eight-level, 785,000-square-foot (72,900-square-meter) venue for basketball, concerts, and other events. Home court of the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers, the arena is part of a 30-acre (12-hectare) sports-and-entertainment campus called the Rose Quarter.
