    THE SAGE GATESHEAD BY NORMAN FOSTER

    At the time the Sage Gateshead opened in 2004, Foster + Partners was often asked by the media whether they had set out to create a new icon for Tyneside — the conurbation that includes Newcastle, Gateshead and adjacent cities on the banks of the River Tyne.

    The architects replied that their overriding intention had been to create a series of spaces that would prove functionally and aesthetically hospitable to a range of carefully specified uses.

    VCU BRANDCENTER

    The VCU Brandcenter in Richmond, Virginia — part of Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Mass Communications — is one of the foremost advertising programs in North America.

    In an effort to expand and broaden the educational prospectus, a new facility designed by Clive Wilkinson Architects was assembled.

    STUDY IN ENGINEERING

    Architecture as a teaching tool is a very old idea. Think about those cathedrals whose stained glass and sculpture indoctrinated their congregations on the lessons of Christianity. And when Thomas Jefferson was planning the University of Virginia, it is said that he intended the architecture to function partially as text; he had designed the pavilions along the great lawn in different architectural styles to instruct students on Western architecture's greatest achievements.
