    AIA HOUSING AWARDS: MULTIFAMILY

    The condominium building at 1111 East Pike Street in Seattle offers a lively contribution to an urban environment. Located in a dense, walkable, transit-served neighborhood that was formerly Seattle's "auto row," the six-story building features panelized siding in four colors inspired by classic cars of the 1950s. With condo owners given a choice of color for the unit exteriors, those four colors combine to form a variegated patchwork.

    CHERNOBYL BY THE SEA

    The best data available clearly suggest that the emissions of the radioactive isotopes iodine-131 and cesium-137 from the compound disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in 2011 are now comparable to the total emissions of those isotopes from the Chernobyl accident in 1986.

    These scientific estimates have been published by the national weather agency of Austria, based on detailed weather modeling since the start of the Fukushima accident 14 days ago.

    EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI AFTERMATH

    A huge earthquake of magnitude 9.0 and devastating tsunami hit Japan on Friday afternoon, March 11, 2011, with impacts centering in the vicinity of Sendai. NHK reported in Japan that as of 9pm on Monday, March 28, 2011, the death total from the earthquake and tsunami had risen to 11,004, with 17,339 listed as missing.
