Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #480
Question
What is the difference between an electrical emergency system and a standby system?
Answer
An electrical emergency system is typically a code-required backup power system to provide lighting and any necessary power required for the safe exiting of a building. A standby system provides backup power in case of interrupted electrical service, for the purpose of protecting equipment and minimizing the disruption that could be caused by downed computer systems.

Completed in 1936 on the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada, the Hoover Dam produces an average of 4.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. A new bypass bridge, scheduled to open in late 2010, will divert the traffic of U.S. Route 93 from its present route along the crest of the dam.
