Completed in 1936 on the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada, the Hoover Dam produces an average of 4.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. A new bypass bridge, scheduled to open in late 2010, will divert the traffic of U.S. Route 93 from its present route along the crest of the dam.
