Quizzical Pursuit
—The Architecture Puzzler

Created by Dave Guadagni

Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #479

Question

"Face," "end," and "toe" are three types of what? Hint: this question relates to construction and has nothing to do with the human body.

Answer

Face nailing — nailing two boards face to face so that the nails are perpendicular to the face of each board, as in nailing a trimmer to a king stud. End nailing — nailing perpendicularly through the face of one board into the end grain of another, as in nailing studs to floor plates before standing up a new stud wall. Toe nailing — nailing at an angle through the face of one piece of wood into the face of an abutting perpendicular piece of wood, as in nailing the base of a stud into an existing floor plate.
