    Quizzical Pursuit
    —The Architecture Puzzler

    Created by Dave Guadagni

    Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
    Architecture Puzzler #475

    Question

Sacrifice, truth, power, beauty, life, memory, and obedience were "the seven lamps of architecture" in the book by that title. Who was the author and about how long ago was it written?

    Answer

The Seven Lamps of Architecture was written by John Ruskin almost exactly 150 years ago (published in 1849). Each "lamp" was a condition essential to great (gothic) architecture. The book was very influential in its day.
