    SOLID GREEN PRACTICE

Tenth anniversary special issue article—originally published in May 2009.

    PUBLIC ARCHITECTURE OF CURITIBA

Tenth anniversary special issue article—originally published in September 2007.

Curitiba, Brazil — called "the world's greenest city" by the New York Times Magazine in May 2007 — is increasingly well known for its long-term success in integrated land use, transportation, and environmental planning, including its exciting public bus system. Tenth anniversary special issue article—originally published in August 2002.

Zambian vernacular architecture is organic, beautiful, and most importantly, comfortably integrated with the local climate, culture, and harvest cycles. Yet this building culture is not being passed on to younger generations.

WILLIAM TURNBULL - BUILDINGS IN THE LANDSCAPE

Tenth anniversary special issue article—originally published in May 2001.

We ended up on the rugged north coast of California, on an overgrazed sheep meadow, hard by the surf breaking at the foot of the rocky cliffs. The ground was not flat but shaped into low mounds and swells, edged on one side by the ribbon of Highway 1 and indented on the other by ocean forces seeking weak points in the rock.
