International multidisciplinary firm Leo A Daly has promoted vice president Patricia Miller to the position of managing principal of the firm's Dallas, Texas, office. Miller also retains her role as corporate director of hospitality. A 13-year veteran of the firm, Miller has over 30 years of experience in interior design, including hospitality, restaurant, resort, and spa design.

Phoenix · 2010.0421
Gary Nelson, P.E., LEED AP, has joined the Phoenix, Arizona, office of architecture and engineering firm SmithGroup as chief mechanical engineer. Specializing in HVAC design and specification, Nelson has over 37 years of experience and is licensed in 27 states. He comes to the firm from the Phoenix office of DLR Group.

Richland · 2010.0421
At the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Washington, a pair of linked science buildings (pictured above) has received LEED Gold certification. The Seattle office of KMD Architects designed the buildings, the Biological Sciences Facility (BSF) and the Computational Sciences Facility (CSF), which are connected by a glazed commons area.

Completed in 2009 and totaling about 144,400 square feet (13,420), the buildings use 35 percent less energy and 30 percent less water than current best-practice codes, and reach a 77-percent efficiency of net-to-gross square footage, compared to about 50 percent for typical laboratories. Waste heat produced by computer servers in the CSF is used to warm offices and labs. Other sustainable features include energy-efficient lighting, low-e glass, sunshades, and water-conserving plumbing fixtures. Over three-quarters of the materials used in the construction were recycled or saved for future manufacturing products or processes.

The New York City-based Cowperwood Company privately financed and developed the buildings and is leasing them to Battelle, which operates PNNL for the U.S. Department of Energy. D.E. Harvey Builders of Houston, Texas, was the general contractor and Brightworks of Portland, Oregon, was the LEED advisor.

Philadelphia · 2010.0419
Construction continues on the new Salvation Army Kroc Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Located on a brownfield site in the Nicetown-Tioga neighborhood of North Philadelphia, the 130,000-square-foot (12,000-square-meter) facility was designed by MGA Partners in association with PZS Architects, both of Philadelphia.

The community center will include a variety of recreation and fitness facilities, such as an aquatics center, as well as religious worship and performing arts spaces, a day-care center, a cafe, classrooms, and offices for social services. The 12.4-acre (five-hectare) site will feature playing fields and a half-acre (0.2-hectare) community garden, and more than 450 trees will be planted.

The grand opening is slated for October 2010. The project team includes H.F. Lenz, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineer; CVM, structural engineer; Andropogon, landscape architect; Ohlson Lavoie Collaborative, aquatic engineer; and T.N. Ward, construction.

Seattle · 2010.0416
Nine employees have joined the Seattle, Washington, office of ZGF Architects, including four who are rejoining the firm. Todd Stine, AIA, LEED AP, returns to ZGF as a technical design principal after a stint as principal of the Seattle firm Ruffcorn Mott Hinthorne Stine. Eric Ritchey, AIA, rejoins ZGF from the same firm, now as a senior project architect. Two other staff members are returning to ZGF from the Seattle office of NBBJ: Bertha Martinez, AIA, now an associate partner and senior project manager, and Masaru Haruyama, AIA, associate partner and project designer.

Also joining the firm's architectural group are Gabriel Hanson, Associate AIA, LEED AP; Whitney Hall, Associate AIA, LEED AP; and Huyen Hoang, LEED AP. In addition, Kari Thorsen, LEED AP, is joining the interiors group, and Emily Craig, LEED AP, is an intern.
