The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for Cancer Immunotherapeutics & Tumor Immunology (pictured above) recently opened at City of Hope, a biomedical research, treatment, and education institution in Duarte, California. Designed by the Los Angeles office of integrated design firm Perkins+Will, the five-story, 119,000-square-foot (11,100-square-meter) center is a self-contained translational research facility. Translational research, also referred to as "bench to bedside," integrates basic science with clinical studies and patient care.

The Beckman Center houses research labs, laboratory support spaces, and equipment rooms, a radiopharmacy suite, a GMP-compliant cell production plant, offices, collaboration spaces, and conference rooms. The center also includes a 150-seat auditorium, library, and dining areas in the Cabilly-Riggs Academic Center, home to City of Hope's Irell & Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences.

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has dedicated two new buildings at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Federal Research Center Consolidation project in Silver Spring, Maryland. Buildings 31 and 32 will house the FDA's Office of the Commissioner, along with components from the Office of Regulatory Affairs and the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. KlingStubbins, in association with RTKL, served as the designers for the two office buildings.

The buildings are the ninth and tenth completed within the complex. They surround a new landscaped courtyard, continuing the campus design concept that organizes connecting structures around open spaces for FDA use. The buildings have been submitted for LEED certification, targeting a Gold rating.

The design-build team for the modernization of the Byron G. Rogers Federal Office Building (1965) in downtown Denver, Colorado, has been officially selected by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). The team includes HOK as design architect, Bennett Wagner & Grody Architects as architect of record, Mortenson Construction as design-builder, Rocky Mountain Institute as high-performance green building consultant, The RMH Group, Inc. as mechanical and electrical engineer, and Martin/ Martin, Inc. as structural engineer and blast consultant.

The 18-story, 620,000-square-foot (57,600-square-meter) office tower is home to 11 federal agencies. The high-performance green building project will include upgrades to the structural elements and to all major building systems, and is projected to reduce energy use by more than 80 percent over current levels. A LEED Platinum certification will be sought under LEED-NC 2.2.

The project will include replacement of all exterior windows, complete renovation of all tenant spaces and most public spaces, and installation of super-efficient LED lighting, high-performance building/ lighting controls, thermal storage tanks, and rooftop solar thermal collectors. Work is scheduled to begin in October 2010, with construction completion slated for December 2012.

The total project budget is $129,569,364 through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, with $4.85 million in ARRA funds allocated for energy-efficient window upgrades in the adjacent Byron G. Rogers U.S. Courthouse. The courthouse building previously underwent renovations designed by Bennett Wagner & Grody Architects and received a Gold rating as a pilot project under LEED-EB (Existing Buildings) 1.0.

Multidisciplinary design firm WWCOT (Widom Wein Cohen O'Leary Terasawa) has merged with DLR Group (Dana Larson and Roubal and Associates). WWCOT will now be known as DLR Group WWCOT. The firm's offices in Santa Monica, Modesto, Palm Springs, and Riverside, California, will work in concert to form a new Southern California office for DLR Group, and the Shanghai, China, office will provide DLR a formal presence in Asia. The WWCOT leadership team will become principals in DLR Group and will continue to serve clients from WWCOT's four California office locations. Adrian O. Cohen, FAIA, LEED AP, will lead the DLR Group WWCOT office from Los Angeles in the role of regional leader.

Hollis + Miller Architects of Overland Park, Kansas, and Lee's Summit, Missouri, recently promoted Chris Heinz to vice president/ partner, one of seven who share ownership in the firm. Heinz has over 18 years of experience and was formerly a senior associate/ design resource leader.

Three other staff members were also promoted: John Funk, P.E., who oversees the firm's structural engineering services, to senior associate; and David Esely, RA, and Nicole Young to associate.

Architecture and interior design firm Trivers Associates of St. Louis, Missouri, has promoted Andrew Smith to vice president/ project management. He previously served the company as project manager, focused primarily on historic rehabilitation, housing, and hospitality projects.
