Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #459
Question
Illegal logging practices result in the loss of nearly 36 million acres (14.6 million hectares) of natural forests across the world each year. In the Amazon Basin, 60 to 70 percent of the deforestation is for which one of the following purposes: hardwood extraction for export, cattle ranching, large-scale coffee plantations, or local subsistence farming?
Answer
Cattle ranching is the reason for 60% to 70% of Amazon basin deforestation. Most of the rest of the deforestation is caused by small-scale subsistence farming.
