Maya Lin - Unchopping a Tree

Maya Lin - Unchopping A Tree from Unchop A Tree on Vimeo.

As we waited and listened around the world to hear what new increment of our collective fate would emerge from the final days of the Copenhagen climate conference, this new video piece was released by Maya Lin, itself an increment of her "What is Missing?" environmental memorial project. It speaks deeply on the disaster of ongoing deforestation — which represents an amazingly large fraction of the global carbon dioxide imbalance.

A powerful, evocative simplicity permeates this media piece, too, as we have found over the years in her unforgettable physical installations.

Where does the wood we use in our buildings come from, at what cost?

Can we "save two birds with one tree"?

    Can we not?
