Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #453
Question
The question may sound morbid, but why would a hospital patient room be designed as a "dead space"?
Answer
Hospital patient rooms are often designed as "dead spaces" acoustically. They generally contain enough porous materials to absorb sound waves in order to be "quiet" rooms. In contrast, churches are usually designed as "live spaces," with a certain amount of reflective surfaces to enhance sound wave reverberation.
