Washington, D.C. — September 30, 2009 — "Although a lot of the details have yet to be worked out, we are encouraged that the Kerry-Boxer climate bill includes some very strong provisions to promote green buildings, including programs to encourage retrofits and to strengthen green energy building codes, two longstanding AIA priorities," said AIA President, Marvin Malecha, FAIA.

"Because buildings account for 40 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in this country we urge the Senate to ensure that the proportion of allowance revenues that go towards green building initiatives acknowledges this simple truth. Any serious effort to reduce our nation's carbon footprint must start in our homes, offices and buildings."

He added, "We as a nation must signal our commitment to address our national energy needs through design and supporting legislation as a means to achieve carbon neutral solutions. Our future depends on it."
