Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #445
Question
"Just as one learns how to use light in building and to think of it as an integral part early on in the process, so one should conceive color."
— Joseph Esherick
Hue, value, and chroma are sometimes described as the three dimensions of color. Please define these three terms.
Answer
Hue is the name of the color, such as red, blue, or yellow.
Value is lightness or darkness of the color. A light red would have a high value and a dark red a low value. The value is determined by comparing a color to a varying scale of grays, with white at the top and black at the bottom.
Chroma is the strength of the color. It is also a measure of the color's purity or saturation of color. A strong chroma red would be very bright and pure, while a weak chroma red is dull and grayish.
