Perkins + Will has revealed its master plan for Vedanta University Teaching Hospital in a remote section of Puri, India. The hospital is part of an ambitious plan to develop the rural area into a world-class center of education and healthcare. The 500-bed facility would serve as a regional hub for medical specialties and public health research. Planned sustainable features include daylighting, atriums, a green roof, onsite sewage treatment and stormwater management, use of local materials, and landscaping with local plants. The hospital is slated to open in 2011.

Istanbul · 2009.0811
RMJM has revealed its design for a $1 billion development in the Atasehir district of Istanbul, Turkey. Designed by the firm's New York City office and new Istanbul office, the 372,000-square-meter (4 million-square-foot) project includes a 60-story tower, 1,500 residential units, a hotel, offices, and conference facilities, with landscaped public areas and parking facilities.

Planned sustainable features for the LEED-targeted development include rainwater collection and reduction of energy consumption, and buildings will be oriented to minimize solar heat gain on the facades. The tower facade designs feature a spectrum of tiles, ranging from terra cotta to blue to white. The site offers panoramic views of the Bosphorus Strait, Princes' Islands, and Sea of Marmara. Designed for Turkish real estate development company VARYAP, part of Varlibas Group International, the project is scheduled to be completed in 2011.

Also, construction is underway on another RMJM project in Turkey: a Marriott Hotel in Ankara due for completion in October 2010.

Phoenix · 2009.0810

St. Paul · 2009.0803
Markim Hall (pictured above) has been completed at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. The LEED Platinum-targeted building was designed by Bruner/ Cott & Associates of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The $7.5 million, 17,000-square-foot (1,600-square-meter) facility houses the college's Institute for Global Citizenship.

Sustainable features include a super-insulated envelope; extensive daylighting and sensor-controlled electric lighting; triple-glazed in windows on the north, east, and west facades, and the lobby and skylight, and double-glazed south-facing windows, all with low-e glass; a hydronic heating and cooling system that uses radiant ceiling panels and a radiant floor in the atrium; an estimated 45% less water use than a typical building that meets code requirements; and materials such as floor tile made from recycled porcelain, glass mosaic tiles from recycled bottles, window sills of ShetkaStone, made from recycled newspaper, and FSC-certified wood for the windows and all the wood paneling.
