Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #427
Question
What are the four largest Christian churches, and which has the largest dome?
Answer
The four largest churches are St. Peter's in Rome, St. Paul's in London, the Cathedral in Milan, and the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. When originally constructed, the Cathedral in Florence was the largest Christian church in the world, and its famous dome by Filippo Brunelleschi is still the largest dome. The dome at St. Peter's sits on a taller drum and is therefore taller, but its base of 42 meters (138 feet) is considerably less than the Brunelleschi dome's base of 54 meters (177 feet) across.
