    —The Architecture Puzzler

    Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
    Architecture Puzzler #426

    Question

President Obama has pledged to make the White House more environmentally friendly. During the last 16 years, several efforts were made to make the building more sustainable. These included improvements to its lighting, heating, air conditioning, and insulation systems under President Bill Clinton.

Which, if any, of the following systems were implemented under President George W. Bush?

    a. Office paper recycling
    b. Solar water-heating system
    c. Photovoltaic system
    d. Green roof

    Answer

During George W. Bush's presidency, recycling of office paper was encouraged, a solar heating system was installed for heating pool water, and photovoltaic panels were set up on a maintenance shed. Most of this environmental work occurred early in his tenure, after which time the go-green effort lost momentum.
