Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #421
Question
You probably know that thermal storage walls work by storing heat gained by sun exposure during the day, then releasing this heat at night. How do thermal storage walls differ if they are intended to provide cooling?
Answer
For thermal cooling, a thermal storage wall needs to be isolated from solar radiation during the sunlit hours. Later on, the wall is exposed to cool night air (and perhaps the dark sky) to lower its internal temperature. Then the next day, during the warm hours, the wall can act as a heat sink, absorbing heat and moderating indoor temperature.
