    —The Architecture Puzzler

    Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
    Architecture Puzzler #420

    Question

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) water piping is made of synthetic resins and is often used in construction since it is lighter and cheaper than copper piping. What are some of the disadvantages of PVC water piping?

    Answer

PVC piping and fittings are solvent-welded together and therefore can not be disassembled like copper. They are not as easily recycled and, unless treated with special pigments, will deteriorate when exposed to UV light. Due to their flexibility, they must be supported more often, and the plastic softens under heat, so they are not recommended for situations in which they would be subjected to water hotter than 180 degrees Fahrenheit (82 degrees Celsius). There are also environmental concerns about the processing and manufacturing of PVC.
