Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #413
Question
Occasionally you might specify quartersawn lumber. Please describe the milling process for quartersawn lumber. Also describe the grain pattern.
Answer
In one typical method of milling quartersawn lumber, a log is first cut in half lengthwise, then each half is cut in half lengthwise, perpendicular to the first cut. Each quarter is processed by cutting a single board off of one face, then rotating the quarter end for end, then cutting the alternate face. Alternate faces are cut until the quarter is completely cut. Each board will be less wide than the previously cut board, since the quarter log reduces size with each cut.
All of the quartersawn wood grain will be straight, with no plainsawn characteristics. This wood is milled for its look rather than for maximizing the number of boards produced by a log.
