    Decades of deterioration ultimately led the National Park Service to abandon its use of the Cyclorama Building as a visitor center and even as home to the eponymous painting. A new visitor center and museum housing the restored cyclorama opened in April 2008.

    Although the Cyclorama Building was recognized as eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, priority has been given to restoring the historic Gettysburg Battlefield.
