Northeastern Building Types 2008
by ArchitectureWeek
On the campus of Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, the new Heimbold Visual Arts Center by Polshek Partnership Architects provides a dynamic space for diverse studio art programs.
The Heimbold Center is recognized as an exemplar in the 2008 Building Type Awards given by the AIA New York chapter, cosponsored by the Boston Society of Architects.
This new awards program was established to recognize excellence and innovation in specialized facility design. In addition to the educational facility building type, the 2008 awards highlighted the areas of sustainable design and urban design.
Polshek Partnership's design for the Heimbold Center incorporated pre-existing patterns of pedestrian movement between nearby classroom and dormitory buildings. Transparent and translucent glass transmit daylight and provide visual connection to the surrounding landscape, and glass garage doors provide a direct connection to a landscaped terrace. A stone base grounds the building on its historic campus.
