    Quizzical Pursuit
    —The Architecture Puzzler

    Created by Dave Guadagni

    Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
    Architecture Puzzler #379

    Question

In considering thermal impacts and how they relate to building orientation, which of the following statements are correct, based on a northern hemisphere location?

    A. A building orientation east of south will give a better yearly performance and a more equal daily heat distribution than a building oriented west of south.

    B. The amount of radiation received on the west face of the building is higher than that received on a flat roof of the same area.

    Answer

"A" is correct: In the northern hemisphere, the west-facing orientation will perform more poorly with unbalanced heat impacts.

"B" is incorrect: The roof area receives more radiation, since it is exposed for a much greater time each day than the west elevation.
