Palladio Awards 2008
by ArchitectureWeek
The Fonville Press, a cafe and bookstore in the Florida panhandle, combines a 600-square-foot (56-square-meter) shop with two exterior courts. The serenely stylish facility earned Khoury & Vogt Architects one of ten Palladio Awards for 2008.
The annual Palladio Awards program honors outstanding achievement in traditional design, recognizing designers whose work "enhances the beauty and humane qualities of the built environment through creative interpretation or adaptation of design principles developed through 2,500 years of the Western architectural tradition."
Coproduced by Traditional Building and Period Homes magazines, the awards are named in honor of Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio, who created contemporary architecture for his time while using models from the past for inspiration and guidance.
The Fonville Press received an award for new design and construction under 30,000 square feet (2,800 square meters) in the commercial, institutional, and public category. The dual shop-restaurant is located in Alys Beach, Florida, a master-planned New Urbanist resort town with climate-appropriate architecture based on the British colonial style of Bermuda and the Spanish baroque style of Antigua, Guatemala.
