R.K. Stewart, FAIA, has joined Perkins + Will as an associate principal. Stewart will take a leadership role on corporate, commercial, and civic projects in the firm's San Francisco, California, office and will work to expand the firmís presence in Northern California and on the West Coast.

Stewart served as the 2007 president of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and has extensive experience in managing complex mixed-use, renovation, institutional, and high-rise projects. He joins Perkins+Will after 20 years at Gensler, where was a principal. His notable projects include the Bayou Place Urban Entertainment Center adaptive reuse in Houston, Texas, and the Jewish Community Center in San Francisco.

Prior to Gensler, Stewart worked for Heller Manus Architects. He began his career at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM).

Multidisciplinary firm KlingStubbins has promoted four staff members to leadership positions: Paul Leonard, PE, LEED AP; John Neilson, AIA; Kimberly R. Williams; and Marc Clair, AIA.

Leonard now serves as the director of engineering. He has been with the firm for 15 years, most recently holding the position of engineering design principal. Neilson is the market sector leader for science and technology projects. He has over 25 years experience, and previously served as managing principal of the firm's Raleigh, North Carolina, office. Williams is the national director of interiors. She has over 25 years of experience, and previously served as director of interiors for the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, office. Clair serves as national director of business development and marketing. He has 30 years of related experience.

Minneapolis, Minnesota-based Mortenson Construction has promoted Tom Gunkel to CEO and president. Gunkel has been with the company for 25 years, and has served as president and chief operating officer for the past seven years. He began his career at Mortenson in 1983 as a project estimator. Notable projects that the company has completed under Gunkel's leadership include the Walt Disney Concert Hall by Frank Gehry in Los Angeles, California; the FedExForum Basketball Arena in Memphis, Tennessee; and the Cedar Creek Wind Farm in Grover, Colorado.

Architecture and planning firm Rothzeid Kaiserman Thomson & Bee (RKT&B) of New York City has revealed its design for a $30 million hospital complex in Abuja, Nigeria. The first phase of construction for the 273,000-square-foot (25,400-square-meter) facility will include a 70-bed facility with sun screens, a large entrance canopy, and a skylit atrium lobby. Its completion is scheduled for 2009.

Bernard Rothzeid, FAIA, is serving as partner in charge, working with design partner Carmi Bee, FAIA, and managing partner Peter Bafitis, AIA. Other firms involved in the project include the healthcare studio of Perkins Eastman, and FMA Architects Ltd. of Lagos, the Nigerian architects of record. The client is American Hospital Ltd.

RTKL Associates Inc. has promoted Brad T. Barker, AIA, to executive vice president, based in the firm's Dallas, Texas, office. Barker leads the firm's healthcare and health science practice group. Over the course of his 27-year career, he has been involved in the planning and design of a wide variety of healthcare facilities, including new-market hospitals, replacement hospitals, specialty hospitals, freestanding ambulatory-care centers, and numerous hospital expansions and renovations.

His recent projects include West Chester Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Methodist Mansfield Medical Center in Mansfield, Texas. Barker previously served as president and CEO of FDS International, which was acquired by RTKL in 2000.

Construction is underway on a new Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) facility at Western Regional Medical Center in Goodyear, Arizona. The Tulsa, Oklahoma, office of PSA-Dewberry designed the 210,000-square-foot (19,500-square-meter) hospital to support "lean operations," similar to a CTCA facility in Tulsa that the firm designed previously with Gresham, Smith and Partners.

The new facility will include flexible room designs, a streamlined reception and clinical configuration, and larger guest rooms in the residential portion of the building. The opening is scheduled for early 2009. David L. Huey, AIA, is serving as project manager and lead designer for PSA-Dewberry. The project team also includes the Tempe, Arizona, office of Architectural Nexus.

The National Park Service's new Blue Ridge Parkway Destination Center (pictured above) has opened near Asheville, North Carolina. Atlanta, Georgia-based Lord, Aeck & Sargent designed the $9.8 million building to achieve LEED Gold certification. Located adjacent to the Parkway headquarters at Hemphill Knob, the two-story, 12,000-square-foot (1,100-square-meter) center comprises an exhibit hall, a 70-seat theater, staff offices, a gift shop and bookstore, and a classroom. Joshua Gassman, RA, LEED AP, served as project manager and project architect for the firm.

The design team chose building materials and forms to create a contemporary interpretation of the Southern Appalachian vernacular. Wood siding and sloped roofs on the arrival side of the building relate to the mountains. The building is cut into the hillside, and visitors enter on the second floor. To maximize southern exposure in the building, which is angled 30 degrees off true south because of the steep site and the existing entrance road, the southern facade is sectioned into short pieces that are rotated to face south.

Sustainable design features include vented Trombe walls on the south facade; an HVAC system with an energy recovery unit; hydronic radiant-heated flooring; a 10,000-square-foot (900-square-meter) green roof planted with native, drought-tolerant plants; daylighting; sensor-controlled electric lighting; operable windows; a stormwater runoff system; zero-VOC paint and sealants; young-growth cedar siding; concrete walls with high fly-ash content; and a curtain wall with recycled aluminum content.

Dubai · 2008.0203
FXFOWLE International, LLC of New York City and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, has revealed its winning bifurcated-arch design for the Sixth Crossing at Dubai Creek in Dubai. The bridge will be 1.7 kilometers (one mile) long and 205 meters (673 feet) tall, and will comprise six traffic lanes in each direction plus pedestrian walkways and two lanes for transit. At its midpoint, the structure will include an amphitheater, ferry terminal, and access to a planned opera house.

The bridge will connect the area of Jadaf on the west side of the creek and the Lagoons and Festival City developments on the east side. The design was chosen by the Dubai Roads & Transport Authority.
