Brooklyn · 2007.1214
Construction continues on Schermerhorn House, an 11-story supportive housing building in Brooklyn, New York City. Designed by Polshek Partnership Architects, the 97,000-square-foot (9,000-square-meter) building will accommodate 217 residents.

On the principal (north) facade, facing downtown Brooklyn, five translucent channel glass tower elements rise from a transparent glass base. The panelized glass-and-aluminum facade provides daylighting and minimizes the load on four steel trusses, which cantilever the building over subway tunnels below. The south facade, facing the residential neighborhood, features horizontal banding of glass and cement board panels. A landscaped roof terrace on the second level provides an outdoor gathering space.

At ground level on the north, retail and lobby spaces will be visually open and accessible to the public. The building will also include a community-accessible 200-seat performance space. Sustainable design elements include post-consumer recycled glass, a green roof, and a high-efficiency boiler system. Opening is scheduled for spring 2008.

Hollywood · 2007.1213
Ground has been broken for Cherokee Lofts, a mixed-use development in Hollywood, California. The Santa Monica office of Pugh + Scarpa Architecture designed the project, which is expected to achieve LEED Gold certification after completion.

The five-story complex will include 12 condominiums and 2,800 square feet (260 square meters) of ground-floor retail. The development will pay homage to the site's previous building, Cherokee Recording Studios, and MGM Studios before it. Many materials from the existing recording studio will be reused, including dark wood paneling from Germany’s Black Forest from Frank Sinatra's Studio One.

The project is designed to be 40 percent more energy efficient than California energy code requires for new buildings. A double facade will provide shading and privacy and reduce noise, while maintaining views, daylighting, and ventilation. Other sustainable features include water-efficient fixtures, photovoltaics, proximity to transit, a green roof, and materials such as cellulose insulation and FSC-Certified wood.

Punta del Este · 2007.1213
Construction is underway on Edificio Acqua, a high-end residential complex in Punta del Este, Uruguay. Rafael Viñoly Architects designed the project as a six-story, L-shaped structure facing the Atlantic Ocean. The terraced main elevation will step back dramatically with each floor. Varied openings throughout the building will help to minimize the impression of mass. The building is scheduled for occupancy in spring 2008.

Fitzroy North · 2007.1213
Construction is complete on the "Tattoo House" addition by Andrew Maynard Architects. Located in the Fitzroy North, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, the two-story addition provides new open-plan kitchen and living space. Bi-fold doors can open to create a first-floor corner completely open to the outside. The project's signature element is its "tattoo" of full-height, UV-stable stickers applied to the glass exterior. Designed to imitate the silhouettes of local trees, the graphics soften the addition's boxy form as well as reducing heat transfer and glare.
